Every year on June 16, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR), a United Nations-recognized observance that honors the significant contributions of over 200 million migrant workers and their families. These individuals send more than US$600 billion annually in remittances—lifelines that support households, boost local economies, and drive sustainable development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
For 2025, the campaign theme is “Remittances Financing Development”, focusing on how remittances can bridge the critical financing gap needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With an estimated US$4 trillion annual shortfall in sustainable development financing, the role of remittances is more crucial than ever.
Why Remittances Matter
Over the past decade, over US$5 trillion has been sent to LMICs—much of it flowing directly to rural areas, where access to formal financial services is often limited. These funds go beyond daily necessities; they are invested in education, healthcare, housing, and small businesses.
